THE BITTER HEART

Sometimes I think I have too big an appetite to be involved in this kind of relationship for this long.
They say if you get hungry enough you will eat your own heart.
Its bitter, very bitter, and almost thankfully,  there isn’t much left.
And I go on because there seems to always be a little more from where the last bite came from.

"In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, ‘Is it good, friend?’
It is bitter — bitter,’ he answered,
But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
