THEOLOGY...

...has the same relation to Religion as Truth does to History...
That is to say...none at all.

Hey, Mike!
I'm not much on thinkin', I don' do it often...but i needed to catch up on some posts to meet my 1 a day goal, and I have been way entertaining lately, so I thought I'd throw a curve here and show you all what I complicated kind of guy I truly am!

Theology .... a big word. So we jump from 'faith' which is palatable yet a concept as difficult as can be to ...

a study of religion that is practically incomprehensible. I'd have to agree and disagree with this quote.

i think the 12 steps has hit the mark a bit closer: first, you have to be willing to let go of your own ability to stay 'clean' and give that power over to something greater than yourself.

so ask yourself: am I strong enough, powerful enough, disciplined enough to stay away from my addictive behaviours without any outside 'greater power's' help?

because eventually, even a baby bird is pushed out of the nest and forced to fly on its own.

i wonder if that little bird has faith it can fly when mom pushes him/her over the edge ....??

Oh, so you are finally looking for God, are you? Not continuing to be a wise crack? Interesting! I would not go after it too intellectually (as you just try, that`s evading). Trusting is such a good word.
Here is a proverb from Proverbs, 3, 5 and 6 (The Bible, in case you don`t know where to look):
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy way acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Simple as that.

Hey Bulletholes, see my late posting under comments for your previous posting...I hope you are well, and still a smart aleck!

We all come at God from a different angle, and for most of us it's an evolutionary process.

Oh dear, this philosophy business is damn tricky....

I just demolished my earlier argument.
Truth has a relation to history, and although some "history" is flawed and incorrect, I would argue most historians generally seek the truth.

Theologians must indeed consult religion, for theology is the study of a god or gods, and without religion there would be no reason whatsoever to study such nebulous and unproved concepts.
Religion, by its very definition must insist that there is (or are) god(s), because without belief in them, religions implode.
So we get the old conundrum that "Faith denies proof; proof denies faith".

I can't see a direct correlation between your two statements, other than to say neither appear to be true.

Whatever people's opinion about thinking, I like your theorem. Or in any case the first part of it. About history I don't care very much. That's my brother's territory... he's a fully qualified historian. Nor do I care about theology... I think those, theology and history are a pair. The other two items match very well too, religion & truth. Both truth and religion are only valid withing themsellves... which is the funny part of it.

Keep on thinkin' everybody! Thinking is feeling's sad little brother.

Hell, I don't know what I'm saying, I just woke up you see. Hellooo to everyone on this joyful morning! We'll make the best of it. Yes we can, goddamnit! (Now there's a MAN's slogan.)

how does truth have no relation to history? i don't get it.

and i don't think all religions demand a belief in god, anyway.

so i think your statement is bogus.

that said, i still like your philosophical musings. keep throwin' 'em out here every once in a while. and i especially like *e*'s comment on the last post. (even though i don't believe in god.)

that's my 3 cents...

Cornbread, this was a quote from someone I can't rightly recollect, though I suspect it was Heimlein as well.
i put these up as things I used to believe to some extent for many years, but doubt they have any real validity. Even if there wre to be true, they would be qworthless.
What I really wonder is how I could go so long spouting this stuff...
